In foreclosure? Move to England and squat.

I love this podcast. It’s too bad the Washington Post stopped updating it.  About three minutes per episode, each episode is devoted to a person mainly discussing being. That might mean what they do for a living.  Or it might mean what it’s like to have certain difficulties or talents (sometimes one and the same).  Or maybe ‘being’ means bitching about those people who get on the elevator and ride it for only one floor.

happiness

Lindy Hop

I was in Brat, a groovy store, with my daughter. It’s a wonderful store, a cross between Yarmozone (of Berkeley) or Reminiscence (of New York)  and the Lindy Hop.  The proprietress kindly let my 11 year old daughter take 45 minutes to pick out a secret santa gift, and she also didn’t mind when my daughter rubbed her face all over a fuzzy soft knit hat shaped like a tiger then proceeded to wear it the entire time she was in the store, except when I took it off her at which time she donned another hat and wore that the rest of the time.  But where was I.  The proprietress and I were talking about music.

She said, “When I was growing up there was always music playing. Old music, new music, world music, everything.”

I said, “Lots of musicians in your family?”

“Actually no. I just come from happy people.”

Increase in the chance that you will be happy if the following people are happy:

  • 34% Next-door neighbor
  • 25% Nearby friend
  • 14% Nearby sibling
  • 8% Spouse

convenience store reform

we need this.

“For mothers to maybe have a sip of alcohol while children play is, I think, welcome.” - Kazuo Kimera, a spokesman for Lawson Inc., which has about 8,600 convenience stores across Japan. Source

OK maybe drunk mothers with semi-unattended babies is not good reform; but still, I’d rather be able to book airplane tickets, drop off laundry, or pay income tax at a 7-11 than buy HFCS product or greasy pizza. I can’t remember the last time I set foot in a 7-11, because they creep me out.

an important side note

I’m fully aware of the fact that if I exercised regularly, or drank heavily, I would not need these specialized or fancy fixed assets featured in the previous posts. I figure I might as well be comfortable while I ponder my resistance to said self-improvement.

Another reason for the flurry of purchases this year may be that it is impossible to buy a home where we live.  Buying these things perhaps allows us to have some control over our home, and to make it feel like home, even if we are here by the good grace of and somewhat tough rent paid to someone else, eg the landlord.   We do appreciate our excellent landlord, and sometimes I am not sure that owning a home is the living end, anyway.

Or maybe it was just time to buy a bed, refrigerator, desk, chair, and recliner, and there’s no need to explain why.

“It is easy to offer a reward, but it is not easy to help people find their own motivation.”
Edward Deci

This conversion away from the economic to something personal and intrinsically meaningful, seems to me, mysterious and powerful. It happens. I’ve seen it happen.
